Koi No Yokan – Deftones

ImageKoi No Yokan, is Alt Metal Deftones seventh full length album, which was released to the UK on the 12th of November, 2012.

After a two year wait for a new album from the band, I had it pre-ordered and ready to enter my ears. Anyone that knows me knows that I am a massive Deftones fan. Their music has gotten me through good and bad times, and never fails to give me that buzz.

I anticipated a different sound to what I love from Deftones. I have always been drawn to their late nineties, early noughties nu-metal, high school, skating sounds. But listening to their 2010 album, Diamiond Eyes, I excepted that they have moved forwards and have taken on a more emotion raw, sexual and dreamlike sound, so I knew what to expect.

I first listened to the album in full the day I received it through the post, The first song that stood out to me was Swerve City. A fast, heavy and personal sounding song, with only a few lyrics, repeated throughout. Hosting their famous heavy bass and a few good screams from frontman Chino Moreno, I thought “Fuck yes, Deftones are back!”. And I’m right, the album carries all their famous Californian metal qualities, with the nu-metal skateboarding feel but with a new futuristic, dreamlike, emotional quality.

The lyrics on the whole album tend to relate to relationships (In my opinion), however the meaning to Deftones lyrics can always be debated as there never tends to be an obvious twist.  My evidence for this is the album’s title “Koi No Yokan” which means when two people meet, and instantly feel like they belong together, in Japanese.

The album has been a pleasure to listen to, as always. Their music will always inspire me and keep me on the metal track when I feel like swaying. Chino has excelled with his vocals, and they have kept their personality throughout the album.
